Bartzella Peony: A Robust Intersectional Hybrid
The Bartzella Peony is an intersectional hybrid, also known as an Itoh peony, resulting from a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies. This variety is recognized for its significant lemon-yellow, semi-double to double flowers that often reach 6 to 9 inches in diameter. The blooms are characterized by soft yellow petals with subtle red flares at the center, providing a distinct visual contrast.
Structural Durability and Growth Habits
Unlike traditional herbaceous peonies that may require support, the Bartzella Peony develops strong, woody stems inherited from its tree peony parentage. These stems maintain an upright posture even when supporting large, heavy blossoms, reducing the need for external staking or cages. The plant typically reaches a mature height of 30 to 36 inches, forming a dense, rounded mound of dark green, deeply lobed foliage.
Planting and Maintenance Guidelines
- Sunlight Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. Providing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily promotes optimal blooming.
- Soil Conditions: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Ensure the planting site does not retain standing water to maintain root health.
- Planting Depth: Position the eyes (buds) of the bare root approximately 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface.
- Seasonal Care: Foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and should be cut back to the ground after the first hard frost in autumn.
